How to Check City-Wise Gold Rates (and Spot a Fake Number)

Gold does not change between Chennai and Chandigarh, but the price you are quoted does. The differences come from landed cost, local bullion association reference rates, competitive intensity and making-charge conventions — not from tax, which is uniform nationally. Small gaps are normal. Large ones are a question, not a bargain.

• Landed cost and logistics. Metal has to reach the market, and distance from a major bullion hub still shows up in cost.
• Local association reference rates. City jewellers' associations publish daily reference figures that many local retailers key off, and these are compiled independently.
• Competition. A street with twenty jewellers prices differently from a town with two.
• Making-charge culture. Regional design traditions differ in complexity, and complexity is labour.
• Purchase timing. A retailer who bought stock at a different point in the week carries a different cost base.

What does not vary is GST, which is set nationally. If someone explains a city gap by pointing at tax, they are either confused or hoping you are.

1. Start with a national reference. Take a published figure from the India Bullion and Jewellers Association or an exchange quote from MCX so you have an anchor that nobody local controls.
2. Note the purity it refers to. Reference rates are normally 24 karat. Jewellery is usually 22 karat at about 91.6 per cent, or 18 karat at 75 per cent.
3. Do the arithmetic yourself. Scale the reference to your purity and multiply by the net weight. That is the metal value before anything else.
4. Collect two or three local quotes. Ask each for metal rate, making charges and tax as separate figures.
5. Compare totals, not headlines. The lowest advertised rate frequently produces the highest final bill.

Some quoted rates exist to generate a visit rather than a sale at that price. The pattern is recognisable once you know it.

None of these require expertise to check. They require only the willingness to ask and to walk away, which costs nothing.

• What purity is this, and can I see the hallmark and the identification number?
• What is the net metal weight, excluding stones?
• What rate are you applying, and to which purity?
• What are the making charges, and are they per gram or a percentage?
• Is there a wastage percentage, and if so, what is it?
• Will the invoice show metal value, making charges and tax separately?
• What is your buy-back policy, and on what basis is it calculated?

A retailer who answers all seven without friction is probably fine. Hesitation on the fourth and sixth is where problems live.

Published city rates are reference figures for metal, typically excluding making charges and often excluding tax. A shop quote is a retail price for a finished article. Expecting them to match is a category error, and being told they should match is a warning sign in itself. The right use of an online rate is as a sanity check on the metal component, nothing more.

Regional markets differ more in convention than in metal. Some markets quote per gram and some per eight grams; some traditionally negotiate making charges and some publish them as fixed; design complexity and typical purity preferences vary by region. None of this affects the value of the metal you are buying — it affects how the quote is presented, which is exactly why converting everything to a per-gram metal value before comparing is the only method that works across cities.

Everything above applies to silver with one adjustment: silver is usually quoted per kilogram rather than per gram, and its price is considerably more volatile day to day. Rarely. Published rates are usually metal-only reference figures, while a shop quote reflects that retailer’s own cost, purity, making charges and tax. A gap is normal. What matters is that the retailer can explain the gap line by line on the invoice.

Not necessarily. Some retailers advertise low making charges and recover margin through the metal rate, wastage percentages or stone valuation. Compare the total bill for a comparable piece rather than any single line, and check the purity marking on both.
